Vlad kind of freaked out when Mike told us about the vampire lords. I was racking my brain trying to remember anything I could about them, but I didn’t know much. All I could remember was they were the oldest vamps in existence and ruled the vampires. They didn’t have many rules, but what rules they did have were created by the lords.

“What’s the significance of the vampire lords all coming to town and meeting with Dmitry? He’s not even a vampire.” My question echoed off the sewer tunnel, and I had to remember to keep my voice down.

The crazy vampire next to me just smiled and kept walking. So I turned my head around to look at Vlad.

“I don’t know why they would give Dmitry the time of day.” Vlad pursed his lips and walked a bit closer to me. “The lords are elitists. Even I wouldn’t be able to get an audience with any of them. If you aren’t in line to succeed them or directly work for them, then you are just dirt on their feet. It must be something huge to get them to all come here at once. I always thought they never met up based on their rules. They are a stickler for rules.”

I hung back a little bit, so I could walk next to Vlad and let the Rat King lead us. “But why wouldn’t they want to all meet up from time to time? They are your leaders, it only makes sense for leaders to meet up on occasion to discuss any issues that may arise … doesn’t it?”

Vlad nodded. “It would if the leaders were normal. These vampires are ancient, blood-thirsty, and never get along with anyone. I heard that when they first formed their council, there were more, but due to fighting over land and power, a few were killed. So, in order to keep from killing each other, they decided to never all meet again. Only a few will gather together at any given time to ensure no more battles between the lords take place. Without them, we would have chaos.”

“How so?” I wondered aloud.

“When a vampire goes on a killing spree, they tend to catch the attention of the human governments. We may be stronger than any human, but they have numbers on their side. The last thing we want is for the governments to come down on us. At one time, we were hunted and burned at the stake to such a degree that we almost died out. The vampire lords took us all and helped us to learn new ways of feeding and operating without killing the humans.”

“So, the only reason vamps don’t feed until their meals are dead is because of the vampire lords and their rules?” I thought it was odd the vamps rarely killed their prey, not that I was upset with the way they fed. I was actually happy they didn’t normally kill the humans.

“Yes,” Vlad explained. “Early on, the lords would go out and kill any vamp who brought attention to us.
